What a Shopify Plus Agency Does (and When You Actually Need One)
Get an AI summary of this post:
Most brands go looking for a Shopify Plus agency at a bad moment. A checkout discount stopped firing. The ERP sync double-counted stock before a sale. Wholesale buyers are emailing orders in because the store can't show them their own prices.
So someone says "we need Plus experts," and now you're comparing agency sites that all promise the same things.
This guide is what we'd want a merchant to read before that first call. It covers what a Shopify Plus agency actually does, what changed on the platform in 2026, what the work costs, and how to vet a partner beyond the badge. We're a Shopify agency, so we'll also be honest about when you don't need one.
Key takeaways
- A Shopify Plus agency plans, builds, migrates, integrates and improves stores on Shopify's enterprise plan. Its value sits in Plus-only tools: checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions, advanced B2B and expansion stores.
- 2026 changed the math. Core B2B now works on every plan, Shopify Scripts stopped running on June 30, and the old "Shopify Plus Partner" badge was replaced by new tiers.
- Plus costs $2,300/month on a 3-year term or $2,500/month on a 1-year term. Agency work is a separate budget.
- Check an agency's tier in Shopify's Partner Directory, then ask for its last three Plus builds.

Get in touchWhat does a Shopify Plus agency do?
A Shopify Plus agency is a team that plans, builds, migrates, integrates and keeps improving stores on Shopify Plus. The useful part is the work a standard Shopify setup can't do well: custom checkout logic, B2B with customer-specific pricing, several regional storefronts, and live connections to your ERP, 3PL and PIM.
In practice, merchants hire a Plus agency for one of six jobs:
|
Job |
What the agency actually does |
Usual engagement |
|---|---|---|
|
Replatforming |
Moves products, customers, orders and URLs off Magento, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, BigCommerce or WooCommerce. Maps 301 redirects so rankings survive. Rebuilds custom logic natively. |
Fixed-scope project |
|
Checkout and Functions |
Builds checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions for discount, shipping and payment rules |
Project or sprint |
|
B2B and blended stores |
Sets up company accounts, catalogs, payment terms, deposits, and B2B plus DTC in one store |
Project |
|
International expansion |
Configures Markets and expansion stores, local pricing, duties and tax |
Project |
|
Integrations |
Connects ERP (NetSuite, SAP, Dynamics), 3PL, PIM and CRM. Automates ops with Shopify Flow. |
Project plus support |
|
Design, CRO and growth |
Theme and UX work, A/B tests, speed, technical SEO |
Monthly retainer |
A migration agency and a growth agency are often not the same team. Plenty of brands use one partner for the replatform and another, or an in-house team, for ongoing CRO.
People also search for a "Shopify Plus design agency" or a "Shopify Plus SEO agency." Most full-service Plus agencies cover design, development and technical SEO. Far fewer run paid media well, so if you need PPC, ask to see ad account results specifically.
What's different about working on Shopify Plus?
The plan gives you control that standard Shopify doesn't, and an agency's job is to put it to use. Four differences matter most.
- Checkout and custom logic. Plus merchants can customize checkout with extensions and write Shopify Functions for discount, shipping and payment rules. This is where most Plus development hours go now.
- B2B depth. Plus keeps unlimited catalogs for customer-specific pricing, direct catalog assignment to companies and locations, partial payments and deposits (Shopify changelog).
- Expansion stores. Plus includes your main store plus 9 expansion stores for regions or sub-brands (Optimum7). Extra stores cost $300/month each (First Pier).
- Lower third-party gateway fee. If you don't use Shopify Payments, Plus charges 0.20% per transaction on top of your processor's fees (First Pier).
What changed in Shopify Plus in 2026
Three changes make most agency guides written before 2026 out of date. If an agency pitches you without mentioning them, that tells you something.
B2B is no longer Plus-only
On April 2, 2026, Shopify opened core B2B to the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans. Those plans now get up to 3 active B2B catalogs, company profiles, payment terms, volume pricing, ACH payments in the US and vaulted cards (Shopify changelog).
Our take: if you run one or two wholesale price lists with standard net terms, you may not need Plus for B2B anymore. You need Plus when each account has its own negotiated pricing, or when you take deposits and partial payments. That's the point where a Plus agency earns its fee.
Shopify Scripts stopped running
Shopify froze Script editing on April 15, 2026, and every Script stopped executing on June 30, 2026 (Shopify developer changelog). Any tiered discount, shipping rule or payment filter still written as a Ruby Script fell back to default behavior.
If your store used Scripts and nobody rebuilt them as Functions, test your checkout today. Shopify's Scripts customizations report shows what each one did.
The "Shopify Plus Partner" badge changed
Shopify retired its old Plus Partner program in December 2024 (Shopify Help Center). Service agencies now sit in tiers: Registered, Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum. The Partner Directory lets you browse Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum partners separately (Shopify Help Center).
So "Plus Partner" now means the Plus tier of the new program. An agency still showing the pre-2025 badge hasn't updated its materials, which is worth a question.
Let's Build Your Custom Shopify Store
We help you build a Shopify store that fits your brand perfectly.
Get in touchDo you actually need a Shopify Plus agency?
You need one when your problems are Plus-specific: a complex migration, custom checkout logic, account-level B2B pricing or several regional stores. If your store mainly needs a better theme or more traffic, a standard Shopify agency or a strong freelancer is usually cheaper and just as effective.
|
Your situation |
What you probably need |
|---|---|
|
Under about $80K/month in sales, one market, simple wholesale |
Stay on Advanced. A Shopify agency or freelancer is enough. |
|
Moving off Magento or Salesforce Commerce Cloud with lots of custom logic |
A Plus agency with a real replatforming track record |
|
Per-account B2B pricing, deposits or partial payments |
Plus, and an agency with B2B builds to show you |
|
Separate storefronts for the US, UK and EU |
A Plus agency that has set up expansion stores and Markets |
|
Store works, but growth has stalled |
A CRO or growth retainer. Partner tier matters less here. |
|
You have in-house developers |
An agency for specialist sprints only (Functions, ERP) |
The $80K figure is the commonly cited point where Shopify suggests considering an upgrade (Ringly). Treat it as a prompt to run your numbers, not a rule.
Four signs you've outgrown doing it yourself:
- Your team spends more time on workarounds than on growth. Spreadsheets syncing inventory, manual order edits, discount codes juggled by hand.
- B2B and DTC are fighting each other. Two systems, duplicate customer records, wholesale buyers seeing retail prices.
- Your international launch keeps slipping. Local pricing, duties, tax and language each turn into their own project.
- Speed is costing you sales. In a Deloitte study commissioned by Google, a 0.1-second gain in mobile speed lifted retail conversions by 8.4% (web.dev). Plus stores carrying years of apps and custom code are often slow.
How much does a Shopify Plus agency cost?
Budget for two separate things: the Shopify Plus license and the agency's work. The license starts at $2,300/month on a 3-year term or $2,500/month on a 1-year term. Agency fees depend on scope and the partner's tier, and in year one they're usually the bigger number.

How to choose a Shopify Plus agency: 7 questions to ask
A badge tells you an agency has volume on Shopify. It doesn't tell you they're right for your project. Ask these on the first call.
- What's your current tier, and where is it in the Partner Directory? Check it yourself. Tiers reflect history and volume, not the quality of any one project.
- Show me your last three Plus builds. Live URLs, what you built, and who I can call at each brand.
- Who writes the code? An in-house team, or work passed to subcontractors?
- How did you handle the Scripts shutdown for your clients? A good answer names specific Functions they shipped.
- What's your migration SEO process? Look for URL mapping, 301 redirects, metadata transfer and a post-launch crawl.
- What happens after launch? Response times, who's on call during BFCM, and what a retainer covers.
- Tell me about a project that ran over. Every agency has one. How they talk about it shows how they'll treat you.
How Crawlapps works on Shopify Plus projects
We've worked with 430+ brands that have done. Every Plus project runs through three stages.
1. Discovery. Before any code, we map your catalog, integrations, B2B rules and markets. We ask why you want each feature, not just what. You get a written scope and timeline.
2. Design for conversion. Mobile-first wireframes, then UI. A beautiful store that doesn't convert is expensive decoration. For Ikiru, our redesign lifted conversion rate by 22% (case study).
3. Build and migrate. We move every product, customer and order from Magento, WooCommerce or BigCommerce while your current store keeps selling. Brands that need it get a headless build on Hydrogen.

Frequently asked questions
Q: What does a Shopify Plus agency do?
It plans, builds, migrates and improves stores on Shopify Plus. Most of the work is Plus-specific: checkout extensions and Shopify Functions, B2B with account-level pricing, expansion stores for new markets, and ERP or 3PL integrations. Many also run CRO and speed work on retainer.
Q: Do I need Shopify Plus for B2B?
Not always. Since April 2, 2026, Basic, Grow and Advanced include core B2B with up to 3 catalogs, company profiles and payment terms. You need Plus for unlimited catalogs with per-company pricing, deposits and partial payments.
Q: How much does a Shopify Plus agency charge?
It depends on scope. Support retainers commonly run $1,000 to $10,000 a month, and higher-tier agencies often set project minimums of $25K to $50K or more. That's on top of the Plus license, which starts at $2,300 a month.
Q: What's the difference between a Shopify agency and a Shopify Plus agency?
Skill set and project size. A Shopify Plus agency has shipped enterprise work: migrations from Magento or Salesforce, Functions, B2B and multi-store setups. A general Shopify agency is often better value for theme work and smaller stores.
Q: How long does a Shopify Plus migration take?
Upgrading an existing Shopify store to Plus is mostly a contract change. A full replatform from Magento or Salesforce takes longer and depends on integrations and data volume.
Q: Is a Shopify Plus Partner the same as a Shopify Plus agency?
Not exactly. "Plus" is now one tier in Shopify's Partner Program, between Select and Premier. Plenty of agencies do strong Plus work at Select tier, and a higher tier doesn't guarantee a fit. Check the directory, then judge the work.
What to do next
If you're already on Plus, the most useful thing you can do this week is confirm nothing in your checkout still depended on Scripts. If you're deciding whether to upgrade, map your real B2B and market needs against the table above before you sign a 3-year term.
Either way, we'll look at your store and tell you plainly what we'd fix first, including when the answer is "you don't need Plus yet." Get a free Shopify audit.
