Shopify Abandoned Checkout Not Working? Here's Why and How to Fix It

You open Orders > Abandoned checkouts and see 40 shoppers who reached the payment page and left. Then you check how many recovery emails went out. Zero. Or maybe three.

When a Shopify abandoned checkout is not working, it's rarely a Shopify outage. Most of the time it's one setting: by default, Shopify only sends the email to shoppers who ticked the marketing box. Most shoppers never tick it.

This guide covers every reason Shopify skips an abandoned checkout email, based on Shopify's own Help Center and the problems merchants raise most in the Shopify Community. For each one, you get the exact fix. You'll also learn how to test the flow properly, because the way most people test it gives a false "it's broken" result.

Quick answer

Shopify abandoned checkout emails usually fail because the automation only sends to email subscribers (the default), the automation is off, the wrong trigger or email section is used, the shopper bought before the wait time ended, or the checkout didn't happen on the Online Store or Buy Button. Start by checking the "To:" field in Apps > Messaging > Automations

First, find out which problem you actually have

"Not working" can mean five different things. Match what you see to the table, then jump to the matching fix.

Shopify Abandoned Checkout Email Not Sending

Abandoned cart vs abandoned checkout: why the difference matters

Shopify treats these as two separate events, and they follow different rules.

An abandoned checkout happens when a shopper reaches checkout, enters their email, and leaves without paying. Shopify counts it as abandoned once it stays incomplete for more than ten minutes after the email is entered.

An abandoned cart happens earlier. The shopper adds products but never reaches checkout. Shopify only knows who they are if they're logged in or already on your list.

Here's why it matters. For the abandoned checkout automation, you can choose to email all customers. Abandoned cart and browse emails count as marketing, so Shopify only sends them to people who gave consent. Mix up the two and your flow throws errors.

1. The email only goes to marketing subscribers

This is the most common cause by far. Shopify's newer abandoned checkout automation sends only to customers subscribed to email marketing unless you change it. Everyone who skipped the marketing checkbox is silently left out.

How to fix it:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Messaging > Automations.
  2. Open the Abandoned checkout automation.
  3. Click Edit > Edit email.
  4. Next to To:, choose All customers.
  5. Click Save.

Still on the older settings? Open the Abandoned checkout emails by Shopify automation, click Edit settings, and in Send to pick the option that covers anyone who abandons checkout, not only subscribers.

Before you switch: if you sell to the EU, the UK or other regions with strict email rules, check with a legal adviser whether a recovery email to non-subscribers is allowed for your store.

2. The automation is turned off, or you're looking in the wrong place

Shopify moved abandoned checkout emails into the Shopify Messaging app. Many merchants still look under Settings > Checkout, can't find the section, and assume it's broken.

To turn on the new automation, go to Apps > Messaging > Automations, click View templates, pick Abandoned checkout, then click Turn on automation.

One warning: switching to the new automation is permanent. You can't go back to the old abandoned checkout emails afterwards, so check your old settings first.

3. Your workflow uses the wrong trigger

If you built the flow yourself, look at the trigger. "Customer left online store without making a purchase" is a browse abandonment trigger. It only fires for visitors Shopify can already identify, so most shoppers never get the email.

For checkout recovery, the trigger should be Customer abandons checkout. It fires after a shopper enters their email at checkout and leaves before paying.

4. Your email uses the Abandoned Cart section instead of Abandoned Checkout

This one is easy to miss. The email editor has a product block for abandoned carts and a separate one for abandoned checkouts. If your checkout email contains the cart block, the send fails, even when you test with your own address. In one Shopify Community thread, a merchant's emails started working as soon as Shopify Support spotted this swap.

Fix: open the email, delete the abandoned cart block, add the abandoned checkout block, and save. While you're there, check the template has no errors, such as links to products that are no longer active.

5. The shopper already bought (this isn't a bug)

Shopify cancels the email if the shopper completes a purchase before the wait time ends. It also holds the email if the same shopper abandoned a newer checkout and that newer timer hasn't run out yet.

This is why many "tests" look broken. You abandon a checkout, come back to buy, and of course no email arrives.

6. The shopper gave a phone number, not an email

If your checkout lets shoppers choose between a phone number and an email, some will pick the phone. Shopify can't send an email to a phone number.

Fix: in Settings > Checkout, review the customer contact method. Ask for email if recovery emails matter more to you, or set up SMS recovery. Keep in mind that SMS needs its own consent; email consent doesn't cover texts.

7. Something in the cart blocks the email

Shopify skips the email when:

  • none of the products in the checkout can be bought anymore, for example they're out of stock
  • every product is free and the shopper never reached a paid shipping step
  • on the older setup, your store doesn't ship to the shopper's address

Fix: check inventory on your best sellers and review your shipping zones in Settings > Shipping and delivery.

8. Shopify Payments blocked the payment as high risk

When Shopify Payments flags a checkout as likely fraud, it blocks the payment and no recovery email goes out. These checkouts show in the Blocked view of your abandoned checkouts.

If you know the customer is genuine, create a draft order and send them an invoice instead.

9. The checkout didn't come from the Online Store or Buy Button

Recovery emails only work for checkouts on the Online Store and Buy Button sales channels. Checkouts from Shopify POS, the Shop app, or third-party channels don't get one.

The same goes for custom or headless storefronts built on the API, and for apps that create orders through draft orders. If that's your setup, pull abandoned checkouts through the API and send reminders with your own email tool or a recovery app that supports your channel.

Abandoned checkouts not showing in your Shopify admin?

Sometimes the email isn't the problem. The checkout never shows up at all. Here's what usually explains it:

  • No email entered. Without an email, it isn't an abandoned checkout in Shopify's eyes.
  • Less than ten minutes passed. Shopify waits ten minutes after the email is entered before marking it abandoned.
  • It's older than three months. Shopify deletes these automatically. Save an important one as a draft order.
  • It looked like a bot. Shopify filters out some suspected card testing and bot activity.
  • A third-party payment gateway didn't report back. If payment went through on the gateway but Shopify never got the confirmation, or the return URL is wrong, you'll see an abandoned checkout instead of an order. Confirm the payment, then recreate it as a draft order and mark it paid.
  • It's a B2B store. Abandoned checkouts are off by default for Shopify B2B. The store owner has to ask Shopify Support to turn them on.

How to test your abandoned checkout flow without fooling yourself

Most failed tests come from the test itself, not the setup. Use this routine:

  1. Use an email that isn't your admin login or a staff account.
  2. Match the test to your "To:" setting. If you send to subscribers only, tick the marketing box at checkout.
  3. Add an in-stock, paid product and go to checkout.
  4. Enter the email and a shipping address you deliver to.
  5. Close the tab. Don't come back and buy.
  6. Wait for the full wait time in your automation, plus the ten-minute abandon window.
  7. Go to Apps > Messaging > Automations, open the automation, click View recent activity, and open the Run ID. The Results section shows whether the email sent or why it failed.

First email sends, but the second one doesn't

The older setup only sends one email per abandoned checkout. With the new automation, you can add a second email in Shopify Flow, but a few things commonly stop it:

  • the condition before the second email is checking the wrong thing
  • the second wait step is longer than your test window
  • the second email's To: field is still set to subscribers only
  • the second email uses the Abandoned Cart block

If every check passes and the second email still shows zero sends, contact Shopify Support and share the Run ID. Merchants have reported this in the Community without a public fix, so don't lose a week on it alone.

Once it works: 5 ways to recover more checkouts

Fixing delivery is step one. Baymard Institute's average across 50 studies puts online cart abandonment at about 70%, so every improvement here pays off.

  1. Test your timing. Shopify defaults a second automation to a 10-hour wait. Try 1 hour against 10 hours for a few weeks and compare recovered orders.
  2. Save the discount for the second email. Shopify lets you add a discount to the email. Leading with it trains shoppers to abandon on purpose.
  3. Name the product in the subject line. Your black leather wallet is still waiting beats You forgot something.
  4. Add SMS for opted-in shoppers. Only for customers who gave a phone number and SMS consent.
  5. Fix the leaks behind the abandonment. Open the Timeline on a few abandoned checkouts. Payment events show declined cards, failed 3-D Secure checks and invalid discount codes, which tell you what to fix at checkout.

Track results in the Abandoned checkouts emails report in the Growth section of your admin. It shows sessions, orders, conversion rate and sales from the emails.

FAQ

Q: Why is my Shopify abandoned checkout email not sending?

Usually because the automation only sends to email marketing subscribers. Change the "To:" field to All customers in Apps > Messaging > Automations. Other causes: the automation is off, the shopper bought already, they gave a phone number, or the checkout came from a channel other than the Online Store or Buy Button.

Q: How long does Shopify wait before sending an abandoned checkout email?

A checkout counts as abandoned ten minutes after the shopper enters their email. The email then goes out after the wait time you set. A second abandoned checkout automation defaults to 10 hours, and you can change it in Shopify Flow.

Q: Can I send abandoned checkout emails to customers who didn't subscribe?

Yes. Shopify lets you set the abandoned checkout email's "To:" field to All customers. Abandoned cart and browse emails are different: they're marketing emails and need consent. Check privacy rules in the regions you sell to.

Q: Can I send an abandoned checkout email manually?

Yes. Go to Orders > Abandoned checkouts, open the checkout, and click the customer's email. Your email app opens with the checkout link. Only send it to that customer, because anyone with the link can finish the checkout.

Q: Why don't I see some abandoned checkouts in my admin?

The shopper may not have entered an email, fewer than ten minutes may have passed, the checkout may be older than three months, or it was filtered as bot activity. Third-party payment gateways and B2B stores can also cause gaps.

What to do right now

If your Shopify abandoned checkout is not working, do three things today. Check the "To:" field. Run one clean test with a fresh email. Then read the Run ID result instead of guessing.

Most of these fixes take a few minutes. Once emails are flowing, spend your time on timing, subject lines and the checkout problems your Timeline reveals.
