How to Migrate to Shopify Without Losing Orders, Rankings or App Users
Get an AI summary of this post:
Most Shopify migrations don't fail on the product import. They fail in the quiet 48 hours around cutover: an order placed on the old site that never reaches Shopify, a returning customer who can't log in, a Shopping campaign still pointing at dead URLs, a mobile app that keeps calling a backend you just switched off.
To migrate to Shopify safely, you need a plan for those moments as much as for the data. This guide gives you both. You'll get the four migration methods and when each one fits, a week-by-week plan, the redirect rules that Shopify's fixed URL structure forces on you, and the 2026 changes most older guides miss: passwordless customer accounts and AI shopping channels. We also cover something almost nobody writes about, which is how to move your mobile app users across without losing ratings or push subscribers
Key takeaways
- Pick your method by data, not budget: the free Store Migration app moves products and customers only; orders, redirects and metafields need Matrixify, a Partner or the API.
- Shopify forces /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ into your URLs, so almost every old URL needs a one-hop 301 redirect.
- New Shopify stores use passwordless customer accounts, so the old "send everyone a password reset" step is mostly gone.
- Plan a content freeze and a delta import, or orders placed during cutover get lost.
- Ship your new app build as an update to your existing App Store and Google Play listings, never as a new app.
Is it worth migrating to Shopify in 2026?
For most DTC brands, yes. Shopify handles hosting, security, checkout and scaling, and it now plugs your catalog into AI shopping channels by default. It's the wrong move if your current platform works and you're switching on trend pressure, or if your B2B logic depends on custom rules Shopify can't model.
The scale argument is real. Shopify merchants did $14.6 billion in sales over Black Friday Cyber Monday 2025, up 27% on the prior year, and 32% of those orders went through Shop Pay according to Shopify's press release. An accelerated checkout that a third of shoppers already have saved is hard to replicate on a self-hosted stack.
The newer argument is distribution. In March 2026 Shopify said its Agentic Storefronts make merchant products discoverable in ChatGPT by default, alongside Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app, with no extra apps or fees beyond standard processing. Your old platform probably can't offer that out of the box.

Choose your Shopify migration method
Shopify's own migration guide lists four routes: copy content by hand, use a migration app, hire a Shopify Partner, or build a custom migration with the Shopify API. The right one depends on which data you need to keep, not just how many SKUs you have.

Shopify's Store Migration guide is upfront that the free app is one lane best suited to smaller brands importing only product and customer data. If you want order history, redirects or reviews to come with you, plan for a second tool from day one.
Pro tip: You can mix methods. Plenty of stores import products with the free app, then use Matrixify for orders and the redirect file.
How much does a Shopify migration cost, and how long does it take?
A small DIY move costs your plan fee plus a few days of work. A mid-size store using Matrixify usually takes three to six weeks. A Plus replatform with integrations typically runs two to four months, and agency fees reach five or six figures depending on scope.
Your running cost starts with the plan. These are list prices at the time of writing; check Shopify's pricing page before you budget, and see our breakdown of Shopify plans, fees and hidden costs for transaction fees and add-ons.

Step-by-step: how to migrate to Shopify
This is the order we'd run a mid-size migration in. Smaller stores can compress weeks into days; the sequence stays the same.
- Week 1: Take a baseline. Export 16 months of Google Search Console data, your top 200 landing pages by revenue, backlinks from Ahrefs or Semrush, and your app metrics (monthly active users, push opt-in rate, app revenue share). You can't prove the migration worked without a before picture.
- Week 1 to 2: Build the redirect map. Map every URL that ranks, earns links or gets paid traffic to its Shopify destination before anyone touches the theme (more on this below).
- Week 2 to 3: Clean the data. Remove dead SKUs, merge duplicate variants, standardise option names ("Size" not "size" or "Sz"), and fix broken images. Shopify standard products allow three options per product, so flatten anything deeper or move it into metafields.
- Week 3 to 5: Import in order. Products first, customers second, orders last, so order line items link to products and customers that already exist. Spot-check 50 products after every batch.
- Week 4 to 6: Build and connect. Theme, apps, payments, shipping zones, tax registrations and Shopify Markets. Connect your ERP, 3PL or CRM through Shopify integrations, and place test orders on every payment method.
- Week 6: Move your trust assets. Reviews, loyalty balances, gift cards, store credit and subscriptions. These are what make returning customers feel at home.
- Week 7: Freeze, delta, cut over. Freeze catalog edits, run a final delta import, switch DNS, then submit the new sitemap.
- Weeks 8 to 20: Monitor for 90 days. Track the scorecard further down and don't redesign anything major in the first 30 days, so you can tell what caused any movement.

Get in touchShopify's URL structure: why almost every URL changes
Shopify hard-codes folder prefixes you can't remove: products live under /products/, collections under /collections/, pages under /pages/ and blog posts under /blogs/blog-name/. You can edit only the handle at the end, which is why a full 301 redirect map is non-negotiable when you migrate to Shopify.
Shopify support and experienced Partners confirm this in the Shopify Community. Collections are also flat, so a nested category path like /home-decor/cushions/blue/ can't be recreated as is.

Four rules keep rankings intact:
- One hop only. Old URL to final Shopify URL, never through an intermediate. If you've migrated before, flatten the old chains too.
- Closest match, never the homepage. Google tends to treat mass homepage redirects as soft 404s.
- Keep handles identical where you can. /products/linen-shirt keeps the same slug even though the folder changed.
- Don't forget the long tail: paginated pages, filtered URLs that earned links, old image URLs that rank in Google Images, and PDFs.
Upload the finished map through Shopify's URL redirects tool as a CSV, then crawl the old URL list with Screaming Frog in list mode to confirm each returns a single 301 to a live 200 page. Once the redirects hold, work through our Shopify SEO checklist for the on-page basics on your new theme.
Customer accounts: the password reset step is (mostly) gone
If you're opening a new Shopify store in 2026, your customers won't need to reset passwords. Shopify deprecated legacy customer accounts on February 26, 2026, and new stores can only use the current version, which signs shoppers in with a one-time email code instead of a password.
That changes the playbook most older guides still teach. You don't need a mass "activate your account" blast on launch day. Customers simply enter their email at login and get a code. What you still need to do:
- Tell them what changed. A short email and a banner ("We've moved to a faster store. Sign in with your email, no password needed") cuts support tickets.
- Check your apps. Shopify warns that apps relying on legacy customer account Liquid pages won't work on the new accounts, so confirm loyalty, wishlist and subscription apps support them.
- Expect saved cards to stay behind. Stored payment methods don't transfer between platforms, so a shopper's first Shopify checkout asks for card details again. Shop Pay softens this for anyone who already uses it elsewhere.
-
Check B2B. If you sell wholesale, build company accounts on the new customer accounts from the start. That's how we set up price lists and buyer access in Shopify B2B and wholesale builds.
How to avoid losing orders during cutover (delta migration)
A delta migration is a final, smaller import of everything created on your old store after the main import: new orders, new customers, new reviews and stock changes. Without it, any sale made in the gap between your last full import and the DNS switch never reaches Shopify.
Here's the timing we recommend:
|
When |
Action |
|---|---|
|
7 days before |
Lower your DNS TTL to 5 minutes so the switch propagates quickly |
|
72 hours before |
Freeze catalog edits, price changes and new promotions on the old store |
|
48 hours before |
Run the last full import, then validate counts (products, customers, orders) against the source |
|
Cutover hour |
Put the old store in maintenance mode, run the delta import, switch DNS |
|
Cutover +1 hour |
Place a live order, refund it, and reconcile order numbers across both systems |
|
Cutover +24 hours |
Run one more delta pass for stragglers, such as orders that arrived through cached pages |
Pick a quiet window. Tuesday or Wednesday early morning in your main market beats a Friday, and never cut over within two weeks of a big sale. If BFCM is close, run an app stack audit first and consider launching after the peak.
Keep your marketing channels running through the move
Your store isn't only a website. Ads, email, analytics and business email all depend on settings that a migration can quietly break.
Google Merchant Center and Shopping ads. Connect the new store's feed through Shopify's Google & YouTube app, but leave the old feed live until the new products are approved. Product IDs usually change on a new platform, so Performance Max and Shopping campaigns may need a few weeks to relearn. Budget for a softer return on ad spend during that window rather than panicking and changing bids.
Pixels and analytics. Reinstall GA4, Meta, TikTok and Google Ads tracking through Shopify's customer events, then confirm purchase events fire with the right values. Add an annotation for cutover day so nobody misreads the dip later.
Email and SMS. Reconnect Klaviyo or your email platform, map the new event names to your flows, and carry over consent status exactly as it was. Re-importing unsubscribed contacts as subscribed is a compliance problem, not a growth hack.
DNS and business email. To point your domain at Shopify you change the A record and the www CNAME. If you move nameservers instead, copy every MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC record first, or your team's email stops arriving the same afternoon your store goes live.
What happens to your mobile app when you migrate to Shopify?
Your app's App Store and Google Play listings belong to your developer accounts, not to your ecommerce platform. So you can keep them. Publish the new Shopify-powered build as an update to the same listing (the same bundle ID on iOS, and the same package name and signing key on Android), and your ratings, reviews and installs stay put.
This is the section most migration guides skip, and it's where we see the most avoidable losses. Three things matter:
Never launch a second app. A new listing starts at zero ratings, zero installs and zero search ranking in the stores. Existing users keep the old app on their phones, and it breaks the day you shut down the old backend.
Ship the new build before cutover, then force the update. Old app versions keep calling your old platform's API. Release the Shopify version a few days early, switched to the new store at cutover, and use a minimum-version prompt so anyone on an old build is sent to update rather than met with an error.
Re-register push, then say hello. Notification permission is tied to the app on the device, so users who opted in stay opted in after an update. Their device tokens still need to register with your new push setup on first open, which is why you want users opening the updated app quickly. A well-timed "We've upgraded the app" push or email does that job.
Also check deep links. Universal Links on iOS and App Links on Android rely on verification files on your domain, and product links in emails and ads now point to /products/ URLs. Test a link from an email, an Instagram bio and a QR code before launch.
If you'd rather not juggle the app release, store cutover and redirects yourself, our Shopify migration service plans them as one launch.
Make your new store visible to ChatGPT and AI shopping agents
Once you're on Shopify, eligible products can show up in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini through Agentic Storefronts, managed from your Shopify admin. Shopify switched this on by default for eligible US merchants in March 2026; your job is making sure the product data is good enough to be recommended.
AI assistants answer questions like "best linen shirt for hot weather under $80". They can only match you if your catalog spells those facts out. Use your migration clean-up to:
- Fill every product attribute you have: brand, GTIN or barcode, material, size, colour, care and use case.
- Write titles and descriptions that name what the product is and who it's for, not just a brand-speak name.
- Bring your reviews across, with their dates and star ratings, so answers have real customer language to draw on.
- Keep Product, Offer and Review structured data valid; test it with Google's Rich Results Test after launch.
- Answer real buyer questions on product and collection pages (sizing, shipping times, returns), because that's what shoppers ask an assistant.
- Check Settings, then Sales channels, then Agentic Storefronts after launch to confirm which channels are on.
Orders from ChatGPT arrive in your admin with ChatGPT referral attribution, according to Shopify, so add AI channels as a line on your post-launch scorecard. For the build side, from structured data to catalog structure, see AI-ready Shopify development.

Have a rollback plan
Keep your old platform subscription and a database backup for at least 30 days. Write down the old DNS records before you change them. Agree a go/no-go gate the day before: if test orders fail on any payment method or more than a handful of top URLs aren't redirecting, you delay. Rolling back is a DNS change plus a reverse delta of any orders taken on Shopify, so it's quick if you've prepared and painful if you haven't.
FAQs about migrating to Shopify
Q: How long does it take to migrate to Shopify?
A store under 200 products can move in a few days. A mid-size store with order history usually takes three to six weeks. A Shopify Plus replatform with ERP or 3PL integrations often takes two to four months.
Q: Will I lose my Google rankings if I move to Shopify?
Not if you redirect every ranking URL in one hop to its closest match, keep titles and content on top pages, and submit the new sitemap at launch. Expect some movement for a few weeks while Google recrawls.
Q: Can I keep my URLs when moving to Shopify?
You can keep the slug, but not the folder. Shopify adds fixed prefixes such as /products/ and /collections/, so you need 301 redirects from the old paths.
Q: What data can't be migrated to Shopify?
Saved payment cards don't transfer. Passwords don't either, but new Shopify stores use passwordless email-code logins, so customers don't need them. Some custom fields need metafields to come across.
Q: Do customers need to reset their passwords after a Shopify migration?
On a new Shopify store in 2026, no. Customers sign in with a one-time code sent to their email, because Shopify deprecated legacy password-based accounts in February 2026.
Q: What happens to my mobile app when I switch to Shopify?
You keep it if you publish the Shopify-powered version as an update to your existing App Store and Google Play listings. Ratings and installs carry over; launching a new listing resets them to zero.
Q: Do I need a Shopify Partner to migrate?
Not for a small, simple store. Bring in a Partner for Plus, B2B, headless builds, complex integrations or any store where organic search drives a large share of revenue.
Your next step
Start with the redirect map and the baseline, this week, before any design work. Those two files decide whether your migration lifts revenue or costs you a quarter of recovery. Then plan your freeze window and your app update together, so your website and your app go live on Shopify in the same hour.
