Shopify Partner Program tiers 2026: Registered, Select, Plus, Premier, Platinum

Most Shopify Partner Program guides still say app developers keep about 80% of their revenue, or that you can get listed in the "Shopify Experts Marketplace". Neither is true in 2026. The program now runs on five performance tiers that Shopify reviews every quarter, scored on revenue and merchant counts, and Verified Skills credentials are waived for this year.

We've been a Shopify Partner since May 2019 and have worked with 430+ brands across the US, India, Europe and the Gulf. This guide covers how the Shopify Partner Program works today: the tier requirements, what each tier unlocks, how partners actually earn, and the attribution mistakes that quietly keep agencies stuck a tier lower than their work deserves.

Key takeaways

  • The Service track has five tiers: Registered, Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum. Shopify updates them on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.
  • Tiers are earned on Shopify-verified revenue (new or existing, whichever is stronger) plus a minimum number of merchants. Credentials are waived for 2026.
  • Shopify takes 0% of an app developer's first $1M of lifetime revenue and 15% above it. The old yearly reset ended in June 2025.
  • The standalone Shopify Plus Partner Agency program ended on December 31, 2024. "Plus" is now a tier.
  • A tier measures commercial volume, not project quality. Merchants should judge a partner on recent, similar work.

Shopify partner tier requirements in 2026

Shopify places Service Partners into a tier using two revenue measures and one merchant count. It takes the stronger of your new referral revenue or your existing merchant revenue, then checks that you also meet that tier's merchant minimum. Here are the thresholds from the Q2 2026 Tiering Guide, as published by Skailama and Lucent Innovation.

The directory row is where most guides go wrong. Several say only Plus and above appear in the Partner Directory. That doesn't match what we see: Crawlapps' own directory profile is live at our current tier. The accurate version is that listing is guaranteed from Plus upward, while lower tiers can still appear.

Use the right badge. Shopify's brand rules say to show only the badge for your current tier and update it everywhere when your tier changes. A stale "Plus" badge on a Select-tier profile is the fastest way to lose a prospect's trust.

How Shopify partners earn money in 2026

Shopify partners earn in three ways: app or theme sales, referral and co-sell incentives, and fees they charge merchants directly for services. For most agencies, client services are by far the biggest line. Program incentives matter more for tier progress and visibility than for cash.

App revenue share (the number most guides get wrong). Shopify takes 0% of a developer's first $1 million of lifetime app revenue and 15% of everything above it. Earnings are added up at the partner level, so all apps under one partner organization share the same $1M runway (Shopify changelog). Until June 2025, that $1M exemption reset every year, and revenue earned before January 1, 2025 doesn't count toward the lifetime total (Business Insider).

Referral and co-sell incentives. Partners earn when a store they create and transfer becomes a paying merchant, and through Shopify-confirmed Plus and Enterprise referrals. Rates and bounty amounts change, and third-party guides quote very different figures, so take the current numbers from the Partner Program Agreement in your dashboard rather than from any blog, including this one.

Client services. This is where agencies make their money: builds, migrations, integrations, CRO, SEO and retainers. Shopify doesn't take a cut of what you charge merchants. What the program adds is credibility, Shopify-led referrals at higher tiers, and development stores to build in.

How partner credit is counted (and how agencies lose it)

Your tier depends on revenue Shopify can tie to your partner organization. If the work isn't attributed, it doesn't count, no matter how good it was. According to the Q2 2026 guide, credit comes from stores you create and transfer, Shopify-confirmed referrals, co-sell deals, and merchants you keep supporting through collaborator accounts (Skailama).

These are the five attribution leaks we see most often when agencies wonder why their tier hasn't moved:

  1. The merchant opened their own trial first. The store exists before you touch it, so there's no transfer credit. When you can, build in a development store from your Partner Dashboard and transfer ownership at launch.
  2. Working from a shared staff login. Logging in with the client's staff account or password ties nothing to your organization. Always request collaborator access from your dashboard.
  3. Dropping collaborator access after launch. Existing merchant revenue is measured through ongoing collaborator relationships. If you're still on retainer, keep that access in place.
  4. Plus deals that skip the referral step. If a client upgrades to Plus after talking to Shopify sales directly, your role can go unrecorded
  5. Work split across several partner accounts. Freelancers and sister brands often run separate Partner IDs. Shopify may aggregate them under a primary ID, so ask Partner Support rather than assuming your numbers are combined.

How to become a Shopify Partner

Joining is free and takes about ten minutes. You start at the Registered tier with full access to the core tools.

  1. Go to shopify.com/partners and click to join.
  2. Create your account with your business email and verify it. The link expires after 24 hours.
  3. Choose whether you're joining as an individual or a business, and set your business location for tax and payouts.
  4. Pick your main goal: client services, apps, themes or referrals.
  5. Complete your business profile and accept the Partner Program Agreement.
  6. From the Partner Dashboard, create your first development store and add your team.

Can partners outside the US join? Yes. The program is global and denominated in US dollars. Crawlapps runs from India and works with merchants in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and the Gulf through the same partner account.

A realistic roadmap from Registered to Plus

Select needs both halves: $100K in new revenue or $500K in existing merchant revenue, and either one Plus or Enterprise merchant or ten Standard-plan merchants. For a services agency, both usually come from the same client work, so the real question is whether that work is attributed to you (see the five leaks above).

Plus is a bigger jump: 2 Plus or Enterprise merchants or 40 Standard-plan merchants, plus $500K in new or $2.5M in existing merchant revenue. Two things move agencies there fastest:

  • Migrations create net-new merchants. Every store you move from Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce or Wix is a new Shopify merchant, if you set it up so it's attributed to you. With Magento 2.4.6 support ending on August 11, 2026, replatforming demand is high right now.
  • Retainers build existing merchant revenue. Ongoing CRO, development and support keep collaborator relationships active across the trailing window.

Does a Shopify partner's tier matter when you're hiring?

A partner's tier tells you how much business they've brought to Shopify. It doesn't tell you whether they're good at your kind of project. Tiers are based on revenue and merchant counts, so a Select agency that specializes in migrations can be a better fit for your replatform than a Platinum agency built around enterprise design.

Where tier does matter is budget. One US agency's analysis of partner pricing puts typical projects at these ranges (Shero Commerce):

Tier

Typical project budget (USD)

US partners at this tier

Plus

$5,000 to $75,000

255

Premier

$25,000 to $200,000

45

Platinum

$50,000 to $500,000+

33

Before you sign with any partner, do three checks:

  1. Verify the tier yourself. Open their profile in the Shopify Partner Directory and compare the badge with the one on their website.
  2. Ask for their last three projects like yours. Same platform move, same catalog size, same B2B or DTC model. Recent and similar beats big logos.
  3. Ask who does the work. Many agencies resell or subcontract. You want to know who writes the code and who answers when something breaks during a sale.

We wrote a separate guide for this decision: how to choose a Shopify partner agency.

Shopify Partner vs Shopify Expert vs Plus Partner

These terms get mixed up constantly, including on agency websites.

Term

What it means in 2026

Shopify Partner

Anyone registered in the Partner Program, at any tier.

Shopify Expert

An older label from the Shopify Experts Marketplace, which the Partner Directory replaced (Skailama). Many agencies still use it informally.

Select / Plus / Premier / Platinum Partner

A Service-track tier earned on revenue and merchant counts.

Shopify Plus Partner

Today, the Plus tier. The separate Plus Partner Agency program ended on December 31, 2024.

Shopify Plus

Shopify's plan for high-volume merchants. Any tier of partner can work on a Plus store.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How does the Shopify Partner Program work in 2026?

It's a free program for agencies, developers and affiliates who work with Shopify merchants. Service Partners are placed in one of five tiers (Registered, Select, Plus, Premier, Platinum) based on Shopify-verified revenue and the number of net-new merchants they bring. Tiers are reviewed quarterly, and credentials are waived for 2026.

Q: How often are Shopify partner tiers reviewed?

Every quarter, on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. Promotions unlock new benefits after the review. Downgrades remove benefits at the next update, so a partner whose recent results slow can drop a tier, especially at Premier and Platinum, which only look back two years.

Q: What happened to the Shopify Plus Partner Program?

The standalone Shopify Plus Partner Agency program was sunset on December 31, 2024. "Plus" is now a tier in the Service track. Reaching it in 2026 takes $500K in new or $2.5M in existing merchant revenue, plus 2 Plus or Enterprise merchants or 40 Standard-plan merchants.

Q: How much does Shopify take from app developers in 2026?

Nothing on the first $1 million of lifetime app revenue, and 15% on revenue above that. The exemption is counted per partner organization, not per app. It used to reset each year, but that ended on June 16, 2025, and revenue earned before 2025 doesn't count toward the $1M.

Q: What's the difference between a Shopify Select Partner and a Plus Partner?

Scale. Select needs $100K in new or $500K in existing merchant revenue plus 1 Plus/Enterprise or 10 Standard merchants. Plus needs five times that revenue and 2 Plus/Enterprise or 40 Standard merchants. Plus also guarantees a Partner Directory listing and can unlock a Partner Success Manager by invitation.

Q: Do I need Shopify certifications to move up a tier?

Not in 2026. Shopify waived Verified Skills credential requirements for this year and is evaluating commercial impact only. The waiver covers 2026, so plan for credentials to matter again, and Shopify Academy courses help your team either way.

Q: Is the Shopify Partner Program free?

Yes. There's no fee to join and no revenue minimum at the Registered tier. You get unlimited development stores, the Partner Dashboard and Shopify Academy from day one.

Q: Can an Indian Shopify partner work with US merchants?

Yes. The program is global and runs in US dollars, and tier credit counts the same wherever your merchants are. Crawlapps is based in India and serves merchants in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and the Gulf through one partner organization.

Q: Does a Shopify partner's tier guarantee quality?

No. A tier reflects revenue and merchant volume. It's a useful signal of experience and budget range, but judge a partner on recent projects similar to yours and on who will actually do the work.

What to do next

If you're a partner, check your tier progress in the Partner Dashboard now that the October 1 review is out, and fix any attribution leaks before the January 1, 2027 update. That's the cheapest tier progress you'll ever make.

If you're a merchant planning a build, migration or B2B setup, Crawlapps has worked with 430+ brands since joining the program in 2019. Get a free Shopify store audit and we'll tell you what to fix first, whether or not you hire us.
