Shopify Editions Spring ’26

Twice a year, Shopify drops an Editions update and the ecommerce world pays attention. Spring '26 is no different, except this time the changes feel less like incremental product improvements and more like Shopify making a definitive statement about where commerce is heading.

The short version: AI is no longer a side feature. It is being wired into the core of how products get discovered, how purchases get made, and how merchants run their operations day to day.

But beyond the AI story, there are real, practical updates across POS, payments, inventory, analytics, and marketing that will affect how you run your store right now.

We went through everything Shopify announced and put it all in one place.

Top 9 Shopify Spring Editions for 2026 You Should Know About

1 Agentic Commerce: Shopping Is Moving Into AI Chats

Shopify is betting heavily on the idea that AI assistants will become a major shopping channel, and Spring '26 is where that bet gets infrastructure behind it.

The foundation is called Shopify Catalog. It is a system that takes your product data, cleans it up, organizes it properly, and then makes it available to AI platforms in a format they can actually use.

When your product data is well-structured and syndicated through this system, it performs significantly better inside AI-powered shopping experiences than products that are not.

On top of that, Shopify has built a checkout layer called the Universal Commerce Protocol. This is what makes it possible for a customer to have a conversation in Microsoft Copilot, find a product, and pay for it without ever leaving that chat window. Shop Pay handles the transaction.

The same capability is also coming soon to Meta ads.

For businesses that are not currently on Shopify, there is now an Agentic Plan that lets you plug your product catalog into this system and start showing up in AI shopping channels without migrating your entire store.

Developers building their own AI shopping experiences also get more tools with an upgraded Catalog API

2 Sidekick

Sidekick is Shopify's built-in AI assistant and it has been getting steadily better with each update and Spring '26 is the biggest jump yet.

The most significant change is that Sidekick now connects with popular third-party apps including Klaviyo, Judge.me, or Smile.

That is a genuinely useful shift because merchants typically have to jump between multiple dashboards to get a full picture of their business.

A few other Sidekick updates worth knowing about:

  • Apple Watch support means you can ask about your store while you are away from your desk or phone

  • Background multitasking lets Sidekick keep working on a task even after you have moved on to something else in the admin

  • Home screen insights appear every time you open your Shopify admin, surfacing relevant tips based on your actual store data

  • Multiple choice follow-ups replace open-ended questions, so when Sidekick needs clarification it gives you options to tap rather than making you type out a full response

  • Sidekick is now available on every screen in the Shopify mobile app, so you can type or talk with it in context as you edit your store from your phone

  • Customer creation - just describe the customer and Sidekick fills out the form

  • Automation testing lets you generate test events for Shopify Flow automations through Sidekick to verify your logic works

  • The built-in app editor now includes code editing, version history, and desktop and mobile preview

3 Online Store Updates

The online store updates in Spring '26 give merchants more precise control over how their store looks and behaves across different customers, channels, and markets.

AI and search:

The most immediately impactful addition is the AI sales associate. Through Shopify Inbox, your store can now have a live AI assistant that helps visitors find products and answers questions.

For shoppers signed into their Shop account, it draws on their purchase history to make recommendations that are actually relevant rather than generic.

Storefront search has also been improved. Customers who misspell words, type things in the wrong order, or use phrasing that does not match your product titles will now get useful results instead of a dead end.

SimGym takes this further by running AI-simulated visitors through your store and surfacing specific ideas for improvement, now working on any theme.

Store management and publishing:

  • Rollouts lets you schedule theme updates or checkout changes as a timed publish or an A/B test, including for localized themes across markets

  • Variant-level publishing gives you control over which product variants appear in which channels and markets

  • Sales channel control in markets lets you customize product availability, pricing, and currency per sales channel connection

  • Visualized markets graph gives you a clearer view of your Shopify Markets setup across discounts, products, and settings in one place

  • Better mobile editing in the Shopify app comes with mobile-designed controls. It is a preview that stays on screen as you edit, and Sidekick built right in

  • Better editing experience on laptops means the theme and checkout editors now show your sections and settings side by side

  • Product compliance disclosure lets you add mandatory warnings that display on your store, in AI channels, and in the Shop app

Discounts and pricing:

  • Discounts by market let you run promotions targeted at specific regions, retail locations, or B2B setups

  • Stacking multiple product discounts allows applying a percentage off and a fixed amount discount to the same product in one order

  • The new Smart Pricing app gives product-level pricing suggestions based on your sales history, inventory, costs, and seasonality

4 Retail

Shopify calls POS v11 its fastest point-of-sale system ever, and early feedback from retailers supports that.

One of the most practical changes is that returns, exchanges, and new purchases can now all be handled in a single cart. Previously these were separate flows which slowed things down at the counter. Now staff can process a return and ring up a new item in the same transaction.

Other retail updates include:

  • In-store only discounts keep retail promotions completely separate from online channels

  • Multi-entity selling lets Shopify Plus merchants operate multiple retail locations under different legal entities from one Shopify store

  • Tap to Pay for multi-entity businesses on Shopify Payments, supporting both iPhone and Android (Shopify Plus)

  • Multi-entity offline payments work across multi-entity retail setups with transaction limits inherited across all stores

5 Marketing

The biggest marketing announcement in Spring '26 is Campaign Autopilot, an AI-powered system that runs campaigns across channels, learns from performance over time, and optimizes results automatically.

Merchants set guardrails to stay in control and can track results as they build up.

Sitting underneath Campaign Autopilot is an expanded Shop Campaigns, which now runs across ChatGPT, Pinterest, and programmatic ads via Microsoft Monetize through a single campaign setup.

You set custom bids for segments like new or lapsed customers and the platform handles distribution across channels.

Final Thoughts

Spring '26 makes one thing clear: Shopify is not just building an ecommerce platform anymore. It is building the infrastructure for how commerce works across AI, retail, and everything in between.

The merchants who take time to explore what is new, rather than waiting for it to become obvious, will be the ones who get the most out of it.
